Order HERE, HERE, HERE and HERE. A joyful, jazzy picture book following a Black family through a week of shared moments and simple pleasures, woven through with hidden musical jewels from spirituals and songs. "We move to the sounds that FLOW through our days. Soft sounds, low sounds, LOUD sounds, slow sounds. Joyful, NOISEFUL, soulful sounds. OUR sounds." For this loving family, each moment of the day is filled with music, from the moment they wake to the sound of Mama humming them into a happy day, to bedtime when Daddy soothes them to sleep, strong hands smoothing brows, warm and slow, sweet chariots swinging low.

PRAISE FOR OUR JOYFUL NOISE
OUR JOYFUL NOISE is a stunning picture book that follows a loving family as they enjoy the glorious sounds and music found in moments throughout their day. The vibrance and love found within this story starts on the very first page and continues with every turn. The author’s gorgeous lyrical writing with beautiful onomatopoeia throughout SINGS off the page. I especially enjoyed all the wonderful familiar sounds that feel like “home” -- from the plop of a fresh picked berry, to the snippety-snap of the dinner beans, to the slap of the kicks on the playground blacktop. Add in the illustrator’s exquisitely portrayed scenes filled with light and love, and this book is pure JOY! I have no doubt that readers will fall in love with OUR JOYFUL NOISE and want to read it over and over again. Highly recommend!

"What a unique and jubilant picture book! The joyful noises that occur in the daily lives of this loving, multi-generational Black family are depicted using onomatopoeia AND song lyrics from hymns, gospel songs, and jazz music. Backmatter includes information on songs referenced in the story. A great mentor text for encouraging young readers to notice and identify all the joyful noises in their own worlds."

Who knew that music could be expressed in prose? This book builds on the rhythm at the heart of a special family, one that makes music and finds joy in the everyday details of what, for some of us, would be a regular school and work day. Author Gabriele Davis has written a story that has readers move to the beat and drink in her words as her characters "snappity-snap dinner beans" or "plop-plop-plop fresh-picked berries" into a pot. And wait till you see their weekends! You'll find yourself wanting to get your sponge mop "whoosh-whooshing" and your hedge clippers "snip-snipping." Davis reminds us of the beauty and the beat...and the love, too.
Illustrator Craig Stanley electrifies Davis's words with light - light in the eyes of a little girl when she first wakes up and looks outside in the morning (I dare you not to smile at this page!), light in the love of a mother as she gets ready for work and nourishes her children, light in the song sung by Grandma as she bakes, love in the hands held round the dinner table.
And yet, at the end, this talented team gracefully bring the joyful noise to a gentle hush, making it great for bedtime.
An awesome, memorable book bursting with joy - a must-have in a picture book collection and an ideal gift, too.
~ Cedar Pruitt, Author of Fire Flight
Heartwarming, rhythmic, and relatable, our joyful noise is an uplifting family story with a creative use of familiar lyrics, especially to those in faith communities. Always love a beautiful book of Black joy!
